Another Journey
Notes from the Last Dog and Pony Show
by Michael Cerveris
Columbus,
OH
Newport Music Hall
FRIDAY 18 September
Seven hours in the car, we aren't expecting much. Columbus added late, so don't know
what the attendance will be like.
Cool venue, old proscenium theater w/o seats smack in the middle of OH. Sound check
surprisingly good.
Hanging out on High Street. $4.99 t shirt shopping, coffee and tea at Insomnia.
Doesn't seem like anyone is going in the club.
Later discover that's because they're already in watching Varneline. We take the stage for
what becomes one of our best shows to date. We play really well, great response. A great
night of rock.
Some nice people point us to Beck Tavern in German Village (not High Beck) where Matt and
I hang for quite a while.
Then back to the weirdest late night scene yet.
Waffle House, Strip Bar and Super 8 -- one stop shopping.
We hit the WH, "hostess" is a big beefy security guy with a gun.
New York is not the scariest city in the country.
Back at the motel, blood on the inside of Matt and Jim's door, Matt sleeps in his clothes
just to be sure, messages scrawled in lipstick on the window.
CRIME SCENE SUPER 8.
Detroit,
MI
St. Andrews Hall
SATURDAY 19th September
Detroit Rock City.
Great dressing room space, sleeping on the couches by the window.
Great food at Hellas in Greek Town.
St. Andrews is a cool place, but boomy sound, severe tuning problems--can't hear at all on
stage. This results in my most off-key vocal moment ever in "Ego". At least I
could make Bob laugh.
Shelter club in the basement with a punk show during ours. Battle of the low frequencies.
An attractive crowd--people also coming from Chicago and Columbus for a second dose.
Post show head for the border. Tedious process, but no hassles. The question
"Mr.Cerveris, are you STILL single?" elicits much laugher from our group.
hahaha......
Long late drive through fog with great house music on the radio.
Another inept Days Inn in London Ont. Strike two for the chain.
