Scene: Kat's Apartment: Next Day
Kat opens the door. Martin is there with a picnic basket.
Martin:
Surprise! It's gorgeous out! C'mon, let's go
for a picnic!
Kat:
Oh, Martin! That's so sweet! But I...
Martin: <entering the
apartment>
Oh c'mon! I've got grape juice. I've got
cheese.
I've got those little forks, y'know.
He stops and sees a baby swing & a familiar crib
next to a very large fuzzy duck.
Martin:
Wow! What's this?
Kat:
Martin, I need to talk to you...
Martin:
It's huge!
Bobby:
<singing from the bathroom>
Doing time in rock & roll prison.
Wishing I could be with my vixen!
Martin:
Yeah, I do think you have to talk to me!
Kat:
Martin, I'm sorry.
I've decided to give Bobby another chance.
Martin:
What about us?
Kat:
Oh, God.
You are the last person
I ever wanted to hurt.
Martin:
Then don't! Hurt him!
He walked out on you.
Kat:
He came back!
He's changed.
And he's the father of my child.
Bobby: <still singing>
I'm here behind bars
Don't have my own car..
Martin:
He's an idiot!
Kat:
Oh well then I'm the idiot because I love
him!
Bobby comes out of the bathroom
and shows her a piece of toilet paper.
Bobby:
Look honey!
My next single!
Martin:
Oh and look he can't even
keep his pants zipped!
Embarassed, Bobby zips them.
Bobby:
Ooops!
Oh thanks Martin!
Martin: <angrily>
Ok. You win!
But you better take care of this woman.
And you better take care of this baby!
Bobby:
Oh, I'm doing it!
Did you see the duck?
Martin:
It's gonna take more than
a big duck to get the job done!
Lemme give you a wake up call!
No more cigarrettes.
And you'd better get used to vomit
on those nice leather pants of yours!
Bobby:
Oh well I already am.
Kat:
Ok Martin.
Martin: <yelling>
And you have to be there 24 hours a day!
Better forget about sleep!
Forget about free time!
You're on the baby's time now!
You feel like jumping on your bike
and riding across country or
partying all night with Rico & Sticks?
- well forget
about it!
Are you ready to give all that up?!
Bobby:
I don't know...
Martin:
Well you'd better know!
Because being a father is hard!
And it's forever!
Bobby:
Kat, I'm sorry.
I can't do this.
I'm no Dad.
Sorry hun.
Bobby takes his leather jacket and leaves.
Martin: <to Bobby as he leaves>
Goodbye!
Don't forget to write!
<to Kat>
There you go!
Kat:
You incredible jerk!
Martin:
Who me?
Kat:
Who gave you the right to do that?
Martin:
I'm trying to do what's best for you and the baby!
Kat:
I get to decide what's best for me and my
baby!
Martin:
Well, isn't it better if he walks out now instead of three months from now?
Kat:
He didn't walk out! You chased him out!
Martin:
Oh C'mon. Kat! There is no way he is ready to
be a father!
Kat:
Oh and when you had Jeremy you were?!
You weren't scared?!
You had no doubts?!
Martin:
Well, yeah! Everybody does!
Kat:
Then why didn't you tell him that?!
Martin:
Kat, I'm sorry.
Kat:
Just go.
Scene: A Bar Closed for the Night
Bobby is sitting on a stool strumming his guitar
still working on the new single.
Sticks & Rico lay passed out nearby.
Bobby:
I'm here behind bars.
My baby's so far...
away!
Crap!
He writes this down and
continues composing.
I'm here in my cell
<struck with sudden inspiration>
My Cellmate is Mel...
Tor-me!
<laughing happily>
Saved it!
<He writes it down>
Martin enters the bar dragging Jeremy behind him.
Martin:
Jeremy come here!
Bobby:
Ahoy there!
Martin:
Hi Bobby.
Look, about the other day...
Bobby:
Yeah, I meant to thank you.
You gave me a real biscuit to chew on.
This daddyo sounds like a holy nightmare!
Martin:
Oh no Bobby!
Martin accidentally bumps the
microphone stand into Bobby.
Bobby:
Oww!
Martin:
Sorry!
Look everybody feels that way.
I thought I should show you some
of the other side.
Some of the really great stuff about
being a Dad. This is my son - Jeremy.
Bobby:
Hello- son- Jeremy.
Jeremy:
Yeah nice to meet you.
Dad, I was supposed to be
at Shannon's 15 minutes ago.
Martin:
So you'll be a little late.
This is Bobby Krull.
Remember that disc I gave you?
Jeremy:
Yeah, I got a buck for it at
discs and things.
Bobby:
Really?!
I've got a whole box of them!
Martin:
You know what my son did for me
a few weeks ago?
He made me muffins - Five times wasn't it?
Jeremy: <taking Martin's arm
off of his>
Yeah, Dad can we be cool about this?
Martin:
Tell Bobby about school!
Jeremy:
I go to school.
Martin:
Tell him about that report you did on Boliva!
This is great!
Jeremy:
I did a report on Boliva. Who cares?
I'll send him a copy! Can we get out of here?
Martin:
This never happens.
He's just a little moody today.
Jeremy pulls away from him and picks up a nearby electric guitar.
Martin:
Jeremy put the guitar down!
But you have to believe me that there
is no greater joy then watching
them grow up.
Become their own people
with their own little ideas!
Jeremy strums the electric chord
creating a hideous screeching sound
reverberating through the bar.
Bobby: <cries in pain>
Bollers!
Martin rushes over to Jeremy; unplugs the speakers to stop the awful noise; takes the
guitar away and pushes Jeremy toward to exit.
Martin:
Gimme that!
Get out of here!
Jeremy: <sarcastically)
Gee do we have to?
Scene: Next Day : In Class
Judith: <asking Martin to get her a mat to sit on>
Get me a blue one.
Martin looks at the pile of mats. They are all blue.
He lets out a heavy sigh before spotting Kat entering the class.
He goes over to her.
Martin:
Kat! I'm really sorry about what I did!
Kat:
Martin you don't have to ..
Martin:
Yes I do. I mean I want you to
know
- whatever happens - whatever you need.
I'm here for you.
Kat:
No I mean you really
don't have to!
She shows hims a huge diamond ring on her finger.
Martin:
My God! Bobby?
Kat:
He showed up on my door last night
saying something about the joy of
forming the baby's little ideas.
Martin:
I'm very happy for you!
Kat:
Thanks!
Bobby enters.
Bobby:
Here I am!
Got to know what to do
when the head pops out!
Hi Martin.
Well what's the drill?
Martin pulls Bobby aside.
Martin:
You did it huh?
Bobby:
Well, Your words moved
me strangely.
Martin:
What about my son? He was such
a ...
Bobby:
Jerk?
Martin:
yeah...
Bobby:
I liked that.
Spunky little bugger!
Reminded me of me.
Martin:
Uhhh..
Judith:
Martin - a mat - I want to sit.
Martin goes over and sits on the floor behind Judith.
He looks over and sees Bobby sitting similarly
behind Kat with his arms & legs wrapped around her.
She takes Bobby's hands and lets him feel the baby.
Kat:
There you feel it?
Bobby: <whispering
softly in awe>
Yeah! It's
really cool.
Kat:
Nice isn't it?
Judith:
Are you ok?
Martin:
Yeah. Well basically. Yeah.
Judith:
Listen after class let me take
you out to dinner.
