"I developed a signature movement, a kind of physical vocabulary
for the louts, with their heads bobbing and through the show, you
can see the development of these movements, starting with "Sensation".

The
louts didn't exist at all until we thought them up for the musical,
and I think they've become critical to the story. They actually grow
up with Tommy, and he, in a sense, becomes one of them. Ironically,
although they abuse him, it's through this interaction that a kind
of love for him comes about. Finally, as his security guards, they
protect him. The louts turned into six wonderful through-line characters,
and I'm very fond of them.
