Act Two
Mr. Murdoch breaks the news to the
Captain that they have struck an iceberg.
The Captain sends Mr. Etches to awaken
the passengers.
Mr. Andrews, also at the
Captain's request, goes below to assess
the damage. He come back shortly to
report the news.
Captain:
Yes - Mr. Andrews.
Andrews:
There is a series of small gashes below the
waterline along the three hundred foot section of the starboard side. There is water in
the fore peak, 1 & 2 holds; in the mailroom; 3 of her boiler rooms - all six of the
six single compartments
have been breached.
Ismay:
That's all right. You assured us those
compartments are watertight.
Andrews:
She was built to stay afloat if 3..perhaps 4
compartments flooded. Certainly not six.
Ismay:
Andrews what are you saying?
Andrews:
...Titanic is sinking, Mr. Ismay.
Ismay:
Nonsense!
God himself couldn't sink this ship!
Captain:
How long has she got Mr. Andrews?
Andrews:
An hour and a half, Captain...
two at the most.
