Steel And Lace

Scene 1: Courtroom

Reporter:
Accused of the crime stands Danny Emerson
- heir to the Emerson Real estate companies.
Controversy arrupted during the trial when
Judge Wilma Freeman allowed 4 of Emerson's
friends to testify to his whereabouts elsewhere
the night of the crime.

Flashback to Night of Crime

Gaily exits out of a building into a dark alley.
She is immediately grabbed by three men.
She cries out - breaks free and runs down the alley.
She falls to the pavement. She looks up
and sees someone standing over her - Daniel.
He helps her to her feet and she realizes..

Danny:
Pretty. Very pretty.

...that he is not there to rescue her...

Courtroom

Gaily watches anxiously as the jury is
brought into the courtroom.
She looks over at the Defense table.

Daniel looks back at her..
She looks away quickly...

Baliff:
Will the foreman please read
the verdict?

Foreman:
Your honor due to insufficent evidence we
find the defendant Daniel Emerson - Not guilty.

Danny:
YES!

Cheers from Danny and his friends.
Oscar pats him on the back.

Albert (Gaily's brother)
begins yelling at the judge

Albert:
Your honor - this is an outrage!
How could you allow this?

Security quiets him as the courtroom empties.

On the way out
Daniel passes by Gaily...
and winks at her.
She begins to cry.

Scene: Limo on the way back from courtroom

Danny:
Something constructive has come
out of this little book.

Toby:
It's all over now-
right Danny?

Danny:
Noo...
It's just beginning.

Oscar:
Huh?

Toby::
What do you mean?

Danny:
We're gonna turn ourselves around.

Turn the business around.
Expand some horizons.

I owe it to you guys for backing me up
when that bitch went to the cops.

From now on we are
partners.
Equal partners.

The sky is the limit!

A bottle of champagne is
opened and passed around
Everyone toasts.

Later:
Worried, Albert is running after Gaily; calling her name.
He follows her to the roof of her apartment building
and watches her as she jumps.

Scene: Five Years Later: Mr. Speigal's house.

Mr Speigal:

I don't have a pen.

Daniel:
Allow me. <handing him pen>
I am so glad that we've been able to
come to this agreement.

Mr. Speigal:
50,000? You offered 60!

Daniel:
I have expenses, Mr Speigel.
You should have taken the 60,000
when I offered it.
I sent some flowers to the hospital
when I heard about your wife's accident.

Mr Speigal:
It wasn't an accident and you know it!

Danny:
Mr. S - Haven't a clue what
you are talking about.

Mr S:
<hands him signed paper>
Get out of here!

Danny:
Not a particularly gracious host.
I'll chalk that up to your recent bad luck.
My associates and I will leave you now.
You have a lot of packing to do.
Be out of the house in 12 hours or
we'll knock it down - with you in it.
And my best to your wife.

Daniel and his friends leave the house.

Danny
<to friends on the way out>
I want it leveled by 5 tomorrow

Craig:
What about the permits?

Danny:
Level it.
We'll worry about the permits later.

Outside

Danny:
Toby.

Toby:
Yeah?

Danny:
What are you a moron?

Toby:
What?

Danny:
Are you somehow retarded?
This should never have taken this long.
It's an old man in there - is it too
difficult for you to handle?

Toby:
No of course not but..

Danny:
<interuppting>
Don't ever make me leave the office
for something like this again!
When I tell one of you to handle something
- that's what I want you to do. Handle it.

Danny puts on his gloves,
takes his sunglasses,
gets in his car
and drives away leaving
the four friends to wonder:

Toby:
I thought we were all equal partners.

Oscar:
Some partners are more equal
than other partners.

On his way home Craig stops to help a beautiful woman on the side of the road apparently having car problems. After fixing her engine - they go to his apartment. She reveals herself to be someone who looks exactly like Gaily before she kills him.

Scene: Daniel's Board Room

Daniel walks in and sits at the head of the table.

Danny:
Morning Men.
We've got a lot to cover before lunch.

Norman:
Daniel!

Danny:
All right.
Reallocation of responsibilites is first up.

Toby:
Daniel - Craig is dead.

Danny:
Yeah - so is Elvis what do you want
me to do about it?

Oscar:
He was murdered. Cut to pieces.

Danny:
<sighing>
Everybody knows that Craig was playing
hooker roulette on Hollywood boulevard for
too long. His luck ran out. That's all.

Norman:
Yeah - well we were just thinking...

Danny:
Well, stop thinking.
Stick to what you know.

Danny:
Where the hell did you
guys get those faces?

You can't be that busted
up about Craig!

Toby:
He was a friend!

Oscar:
He was a partner!.

Danny:
He was a liability.
He was a stupid man.
He died stupid death.

Toby:
Shouldn't we do something anyway?

Danny:
Like?

Toby:
I don't know.
How about a minute of silence?

Danny:
Do you any idea how much business
we have to get through this morning?

Toby:
Half a minute?

Danny: <big sigh>
All right.

Everyone stands. Danny <sigh>
reluctantly joins them taking out his watch
to time the minute

Danny: <putting away watch and sitting down>
All rights that's plenty.

Oscar:
I don't think that was 30 seconds.

Danny:
Well it was. Sit down.
