Assassins
Guns for Broadway

The bumpy
ride to Broadway for Assassins appears to finally be coming to
a succesful end. Artistic director of the Roundabout Theatre Company
Todd Haimes had previously suggested that the long running revival
of Cabaret would play until fall 2003 leaving the space free for
the Assassins Broadway premiere. Plans have since been confirmed
with the production set now to open for previews on March 19,
2004 with an official opening of April 22, 2004.
A Broadway
production of Assassins had previously been planned by Roundabout
only to be cancelled after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks
in America. Soon after the decision to cancel the production,
Sondheim and Weidman released a statement saying, "Assassins
is a show which asks audiences to think critically about various
aspects of the American experience. In light of Tuesday's murderous
assault on our nation and on the most fundamental things in which
we all believe, we, the Roundabout, and director Joe Mantello
believe this is not an appropriate time to present a show which
makes such a demand." The cast of the production at the time
took part in a one-day workshop of the show directed by Joe Mantello
after the September postponement.
Tony Award
winner Joe Mantello (Wicked, Take Me Out) will direct. Paul Gemignani
(Into The Woods, Kiss Me, Kate) will serve as musical director.
